Do you think Eight remembers their name? It's implied at the end of the Splatoon 2 DLC that they get their memories back, but all through Side Order, they're still referred to as Eight, which means either they don't fully have their memories back, or they're much happier as Eight than as whoever they were before, so they kept going by Eight.

The line in Marina's Dev Diary where Eight smiles really widely after Marina calls her Eight and not Agent 8 makes me think the second one. Also makes me wonder what living in Octo Valley is like

if Acht is any clue, Eight might literally be Eight's actual original name, even if they never remember it XD

Octarians are many things- soldiers, engineers, hackers, DJs..... but their leader's name was Octavio, a name based on the Latin word for 8.... There was a slacker down there who's name was just 8 in German.... There's this funny thing actually, that Eight was called Acht in some of the other translations of Splatoon-

so when Acht (dedf1sh) came in later, THEIR name had to be wiggled so there wouldn't be TWO Achts, (In the Dutch and German versions, for example, Eight is Acht and Acht is Smarachne and Ahato, respectively) which is just-

As for Eight remembering or not.... I think you're right. Either way, in this new life Off the Hook helped guide them to, getting their name from Marina is something they'd never give up <3

...so now we can also blame Marina for being really incredibly bad at naming Octolings

(girl you had YEARS. i get that this would also make it kinda hard to stop calling Eight "eight" bc everyone's so used to it, but man)

(Cod knows Shiver didn't have to deal with it- she got hit with Shark Taming Theme Naming instead. good for her. Likewise the little baby Octoling in SashiMori is named PAUL- pun on him being the smol one?- and while we don't know yet if DJ Mashup is the real name of that one traveling octoling who's dads are famous actors- presumably parents like THAT would have more to name their kid after then just the number 8)
